The Laboratory of Medical Zoology (LMZ) is an academic research lab at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. The focus of our research is on infectious diseases, with particular attention to those diseases with transmission cycles that involve other animal species. The general term for these diseases is “zoonoses.” Zoonoses come in many kinds and are as diverse as the animal and microbial kingdoms.
The study of infectious diseases traditionally is conducted by various kinds of biologists such medical entomologists, medical microbiologists, epidemiologists, etc.. We identify ourselves at the intersection of those disciplines, hence Medical Zoology, because we study animals (and microbes) of medical relevance, and don’t draw the line at any particular taxonomic group.
